A Letter

I just wrote this letter to the Israeli government, urging them to do everything in their power to ensure the immediate release of 20 year old Gilad Shalit who was captured by Palestinian terrorists on June 25, 2005. Today, more than 2 1/2 years later, Gilad is still being held captive in Gaza.

Shalom u'vracha,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing to voice my pain - which I think is the pain of all Jews, and people of integrity everywhere - over the continued captivity of Gilad Shalit. Each individual must do what they can to increase light in the world. Each of us can take on additional good deeds in the merit of his release. But it is in your hands to pursue and ensure the physical release of a holy and young Jew who was captured whilst defending his fellows not only in Israel but across the globe, for what happens with the Jews in the Holy Land is the first indicator for those elsewhere in the world.

As our representatives, I implore you to not only speak with strength but to act with it too. In the words of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, the United States is holding a stick and a carrot in either hand. It doesn't really care who of the Arabs or Jews gets which. America's primary concern is to have its own needs met. And so it will give the carrot to whoever makes "more noise" or stands more firmly, and the stick to the party that is more "flexible", ready to negotiate (perceived by others as "easier to push around.")

Our rights to the Land stem from the Creator's Divine commitment to our ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And the more centered and certain we are of that right, and give voice to it in a calm and focused manner, the more peace we will generate in the world for both Jew and Arab, for all the nations of the world.

It is with this voice that I urge you to pursue the release of Gilad Shalit.

And in the merit of your efforts, may we all be released from the delusions that bind us and from the era of exile at which time the entire world will be united under one banner of peace with the coming of Mashiach.

with respect,
Shimona Tzukernik
